A thousand thanks to everyone involved with Arte please stay in contact if we hung out together and chatted all the best and please return the link. So ends another year at Arte Binningen and similar to last year it was great fun a learning experience an exciting international show.
As I did last year I would like to offer a rundown on the show its work and of course its artists. But first and fore most a very warm thank you to the Committee who are such hard working and fantastic people. Sadly they have to put up with a lot of nonsense from those eccentric and egotistical creatures artists but somehow they keep their grace under fire and push on to do a great show every year. If you missed it this year make sure to go next year.

Thanks as well to all those who made it out dropped by to say hi and of course bought something. The committee chooses from hundreds of applicants and attempts to both balance the show but also create an international collection of artists. This years exhibit featured folks from France, Italy, Russia, Poland, Cuba, Colombia, Great Britain, Germany, USA, Austria, and of course Switzerland. It was comprised of three exhibit spaces the main hall a smaller gallery near the front door, and a back area which featured a series of wall mounted installations from August Frei of Binningen. They were both inventive and intriguing and really created an atmosphere.

August Frei

Frei combined every day objects old photos and some paintings to make his clever works.
|
A few large sculptures were displayed in the lobby area and just outside of the building from Leonardo Lucchi (www.leonardolucchi.com) adding space to the main gallery and freeing up room for foot traffic. This year as well there were no closed off areas or dead ends in the space which meant that there was a feeling of more open space all around.

Liliane Pierrot jmpierrot@yahoo.fr 16 rue d’Altkirch, 68400 Riedisheim, France Tel. 0389 44 34 79
Some of my favorite artists were new to the event Liliane Pierrot creates mysterious abstract forms that hint at figures but are still somehow allusive and beguiling.
I felt her works were the strongest of the show and her humble even meek personality didn't fit the power of the work and only added to their mystery.
I had to go and study her works everyday and just take them in.

Ute Olerth uteolerth@gmx.de Hinterm Weiher 5, 79112 Freiburg, Deutschland Tel. 49 (0)7664 2457
Likewise I had a similar response to the works of Ute Olerth also very pleasing abstract forms and fields of pure color somewhere between Rothko and DeKooning but certainly very original.

Pia Poltera Wirtsgartenweg 46, CH 4123 Allschwill 061 481 87 08
A truly lovely person that was often at the event in person and shared my exhibit space was by far the most unique and inventive artist present. Here mixed media works on hand made paper from exotic locals featured collage and batik along side painted passages. I hope to do a larger feature on her once she teaches me how to use batik for my work. Essentially she travels the world bringing back new influences and ideas along with materials and the art is infused with that process.
For my world traveler friends definitely give her a call her prices are reasonable (and she speaks perfect English as well) and being that she works on paper they are cheaply shipped.

Hugo Carrillo www.hugocarrillo.com
A few folks returned with similar works such as my hero Hugo Carrillo.

Evelyn Dönicke gartenstrasse 21, 4132 muttenz fon 079 351 11 11
And the fascinating works from Evelyn Dönicke that include paint, gold, scrawled messages even layers of newspapers and sheet music.

Kaye Kirst kayekirst@bluewin.ch Hofgasse 6, 4144 Arlesheim 061 701 7068
In the same general area as Evelyn was the lone Brit Kaye Kirst her works featured an mix of photo realism and pop styles that almost crept into abstraction. We had a few good chats and found that her bright sunny colors matched her personality.

Christine Doerenbecher 9 rue de la Republique, 68730 Michelbach-le-bas 03 89 68 43 30
This year’s recipients varied in personality and physique as much as artistic style and approach. For example one of my favorites from last year Christine Doerenbecher produced fascinating energetic Parisian scenes that were both romantic and mysterious. This year she returned with erotic works that seemed to be painted with molten lava and liquid gold. It was shocking to see such a transformation in subject and palette but her incredible ability still shone through and the works haunted me for the whole exhibit.

Monika Buri, John King, and Carlo Maggio
Speaking of sunny personalities the works of Monika Buri, John King, and Carlo Maggio a group of artists that live and work in Switzerland, Italy and the U.S. certainly exude warm positive energy. Check them out at www.modernarte.ch. Likewise they were folks that I had a few good chats with hope to run into again.

Gleb Korschov, Dmitri Pankin, Konstantin Veretelnikov
Another group of artist thrown together instead of choosing to work together were Gleb Korschov, Dmitri Pankin and Konstantin Veretelnikov. Working in three completely different styles with opposite interests they were guests of the committee at the show. The exhibit was originally planned 14 years ago as a way to create a community event in quaint Binningen. Now the show has grown to include a wide variety of working, published and internationally renowned artists from around the world as well as a special culture prize. The prize is awarded in the form of travel and exhibit expenses in Switzerland. Two to three artist from Russia are chosen to participate each year and given the chance to travel for a week in Switzerland and see the many incredible sites and museums of Basel.

The youngest of the group Gleb Korschov acted as translator for the three being the only one with English. His works were mesmerizing and seem to come from mystic other world where the ghost of Chagall resides. Gleb has worked as an illustrator animator and fine artist and will certainly go on to great things with his positive attitude and personality. We had some wonderful chats on the nature of art and he expressed his honest love for making and learning about art. I am very glad to have met him and wish him all the best.

Dmitri Pankin is an architect, designer and graphic artist that produces minimalist works on paper that evoke the geometric works of his countrymen circa 1900. As well I was reminded of the studies and drawing I have seen from other architect sculpture artists Calatrava and Frank Gery for example. I was fortunate enough to peek into Dmitri’s notebook during the week and spotted his fondness for mathematics as well in the form of many computations and diagrams all flawlessly rendered with perfect and controlled lines that boggled my mind. It was also great to meet him and a kind of challenge to strive for more control in my work.

|
Last but not least was the ever smiling Konstantin who after four years of working can paint like an old master flawless still lives and scenes that were shocking in their accuracy good ole fashion craft.

A couple of quick mentions of other fantastic works that can speak for themselves through the wonder of the internet (people come on, there are still too many artist ignoring the web and now I can’t link them to the greater global art community!)
Manu Art at www.manu-art.com I hope to feature more on this fellow at a later date. We had a couple of great discussions and he really personifies the giving, energetic, and positive nature of art.
Shivananda Heinz Ackerman www.artshivananda.com produces fantastic work but I have no personal experiences to relate of him.
